    Guide

What is HEIC and why convert it?

HEIC is Apple's default photo format since iOS 11. It's efficient — but not universally supported. Here's everything you need to know.

    What is a HEIC file?

HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. It's the file format used by iPhones and iPads (running iOS 11 and later) to store photos. HEIC uses the HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) compression standard, which was developed by the MPEG group and adopted by Apple in 2017.

The big advantage: HEIC photos are typically half the file size of equivalent JPEG photos, while maintaining the same or better visual quality. A photo that would be 6 MB as a JPEG might only be 3 MB as a HEIC file. This frees up significant storage space on your iPhone.

Apple also supports .heif as an alternative extension for the same format. Both .heic and .heif files are identical in terms of format — only the file extension differs.

Why do I need to convert HEIC to JPG?

While HEIC is excellent for iPhone storage, it causes compatibility problems in many common scenarios:

    • Windows PCs — Windows doesn't natively support HEIC without installing the Microsoft HEIF extension from the Windows Store.
    • Web uploads — Many websites, forms, and apps don't accept HEIC files. Social media sites, email services, and document tools typically only accept JPEG.
    • Photo editing — Older versions of Photoshop, GIMP, and other editors can't open HEIC files.
    • Android sharing — Android phones can't display HEIC files natively.
    • Printing services — Print labs and kiosk machines require JPEG format.

Converting to JPG (JPEG) gives you a universally compatible photo that works everywhere, on every device, in every app.

    FAQ

    Common questions

Slightly — JPEG is a lossy format, and HEIC uses a different compression algorithm. ConvertStack converts at 92% quality by default, which is visually indistinguishable from lossless for typical photos. You won't notice any difference on screen or when printing.
EXIF metadata (date taken, camera model, GPS location) is transferred from the HEIC to the output JPG by the heic2any library we use. However, some metadata may not be preserved depending on the specific HEIC variant.
Yes. HEIC and HEIF are the same format with different file extensions. ConvertStack accepts both .heic and .heif files.
On a Mac: AirDrop or Image Capture. On Windows: USB cable (open Photos app), or OneDrive/Google Photos sync. iCloud Photos also downloads them as HEIC when you access iCloud.com.
